Devil’s Chair, Union Cemetery - Guthrie Center
Within the Union Cemetery located along Hwy 44/State Street in Guthrie Center, an unusual cast cement chair sits without any inscription. Having lost the true meaning over time, the chair somehow became known as the “Devil’s chair” and according to locals, anyone who sits in the chair will experience a case of bad luck. The original purpose of the 19th-century carved monument, however, was to provide comfort to visitors. “Mourning chairs” were at one time quite common in graveyards. This particular chair sits next to the grave of Giles C. Miller who passed away at age 42 leaving behind a young widow and four small children.
